Diabesity in Europe

The term "diabesity" is a new description for diabetes caused by excessive weight and is a trademark from the US non-profit organization Shape Up America!*

The word illustrates the close association between weight and diabetes:
97% of all cases of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) are caused by excessive weight.

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of glucose in the bloodstream. This excessive level of blood glucose is caused either by an insufficiency of the pancreatic hormone "insulin", or by the body's inability to use the insulin it produces.

In today’s Europe, approximately 60 million people live with diabetes, of whom more than 50% are unaware of their condition. T2D is by far the most common type of diabetes, accounting for 85–95% of all cases of diabetes.

This means that we are dealing with 49.5 m to 55.3 m people suffering from diabesity.
Reducing the rate of diabesity is a multi-task operation, involving dietary, exercise and lifestyle counselling.
